Our Respected and the Holy Sewer, oh! sorry River, Yamuna.

I’m a health conscious person but the problem is, am too lazy also. Its not easy for me to wake up early in the morning and go for jogging. Still I tried to do so. I and Kapil (one of my friend), normally, jog on a pull made on Yamuna connecting Geeta Colony to Daryaganj. It was constructed to reduce the load of the traffic from the ITO pull. Upto 3 PM the pull is opened for the commuters moving to Daryaganj and after 3 its open for the people moving from Daryaganj to Geeta Colony.

Early at 6 AM, one side is remained inoperational and it was good to see people working out there. Well, that’s a good use of the unutilized area. Jogging is a good workout for our body. I didn’t have a good sleep last night, so just stopped in between while jogging. Rested for a while-talking and gazing into the Yamuna River. Initially, it seems to be a sewer’s disposal tank. The complete water was black. It didn’t seem to be a river.

This ruined our mood. On the banks of the river, there were quite a few land pieces used for the agriculture. Oh! What a irrigation facility they’re provided, that’s indeed a good sign. A really fresh and polluted air in the morning welcomes us with the great feeling of getting in touch with the nature. What a view it was? Awesome man… I've got something to tell you about the river.

FEW FACTS ABOUT YAMUNA

If London is famous for beauty of its river the Thames, Delhi is known for pollution of the Yamuna River. Once the lifeline of Delhi, Yamuna has now became the most polluted water resource of the country. It now looks like a sewer.
Yamuna is one of the most polluted rivers in the world, especially around New Delhi. New Delhi is the capital city of India. With a total area of 42.7 km2, New Delhi is situated within the metropolis of Delhi and serves as the seat of the Government of India and the Government of the National Capital Territory of Delhi ...., the capital of India, which dumps about 57% of its waste into the river. Though numerous attempts have been made to clean it, the efforts have proven to be futile. Although the government of India has spent nearly $500 million to clean up the river, the river continues to be polluted with garbage while most sewage treatment facilities are underfunded or malfunctioning. In addition, the water in this river remains stagnant for almost 9 months in a year aggravating the situation. Delhi alone contributes around 3,296 MLD (million litres per day) of sewage in the river. The government of India over the next five years has prepared plans to rebuild and repair the sewage system and the drains that empty into the river. To address river pollution, certain measures of cleaning river have been taken by the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) of the Government of India (GOI) in 12 towns of Haryana, 8 towns of Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi under an action plan (Yamuna Action Plan-YAP) which is being implemented since 1993 by the National River Conservation Directorate (NRCD) of the Ministry of Environment and Forests. The Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) is participating in the Yamuna Action Plan
Yamuna Action PlanYamuna Action Plan is the largest river conservation project in India. The project received over Rs 700 crore, ever since its inception in April 1993 from the Japan Bank of International Cooperation .... in 15 of the above 21 towns (excluding 6 towns of
HaryanaHaryana is a States and territories of India in the Punjab region of northern India. It is bordered by Punjab and Himachal Pradesh to the north, and by Rajasthan to the west and south....included later on the direction of the honorable Supreme Court of India) with soft loan assistance of 17.773 billion Japanese yenThe is the currency of Japan. It is the third most-traded currency in the forex after the euro and the United States dollar. It is also widely used as a reserve currency after the U.S.... (equivalent to about Rs. 700 crore INR) while GOI is providing the funds for the remaining 6 towns added later. The Indian government's plans to repair sewage lines is predicted to improve the water quality of the river 90% by the year 2010.

Recently, Delhi chief minister Sheila Dixit claimed that Yamuna would be cleaner up to 70 per cent before the Commonwealth Games in 2010. Ironically, the Delhi government itself submitted an affidavit before the Supreme Court stating that the Yamuna clean drive would not be complete before 2012. In its affidavit, Delhi Jal Board (DJB) said that the river remained a ‘sewage canal’ due to the 143 unauthorized colonies, 1,080 slums and villages that present a problem in collection of sewage water that flows into the Yamuna untreated.

Last but not the least, London’s Thames River was as polluted as Yamuna in the 1960s, but the excellent clean up model was successful in cleaning up the river and we’re trying to clean the river since 1993 and counting…

My Own Delhi

Hi everyone...
I'm Nitin Juneja. I'm here to share some experiences of myself about my city Delhi. Well, to start with a good note is that delhi is one of the most greenest cities of the world.

I wanted to share an experience with you people.
It was evening or I should say a sunny evening. I walked down out from the Cross River Mall (Delhi's longest mall - i guess). I was waiting for one of my friends. Just opposite the Cross river Mall, its Aggarwal Funcity Centre and in between these two malls there’s a DDA’s park. Now, what’s the better place then a park to get away from the crowd and wait in the greenery. But the situation was different here, the park was treeless. Actually the park was all baron.

The park is designed good but not developed well. It has several lakes and a good structure to look out. Now, a guy like me, who is a bit health conscious, will love to see a park or greenery around him to get away from the noise. It is scientifically proved that getting in touch with the nature is the best medicine for the brain. But here the case is even totally different.

Such incomplete projects do help guys like us to learn about the insects like mosquitoes etc. because I found many of them dwelling in the lake. Also, the water was full of the waste papers but the greenery inside the water was really beautiful. The funguses along with the insects were adding glitters to the beauty of the lake. This beautiful lake was the perfect home for the deadly disease spreading insects.

Now, here is the Big Bazar one side and the longest mall of the city (Cross River Mall) other side along with The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI), nearby which has more of the crowd moving then these malls. Former attracts the more the families and the later one handles the students. Also, I got to know that the whole park is booked for the marriages and parties held at night. I think its great for the governemt, they will have more of the families with bad health. This will give government one more reason to make public expenditure on the eradication of the birth of these mosquitoes.
Since, I don't have that much good phone with me but having a camera in your mobile phone does help. I clicked the pictures of the site, few of them are the one flashing on in the blog.
Guys I'm not here to condemn anyone or anybody but I think that we together can make a difference over the issue. Its our own city Delhi, we have to clean it and maintain it.
I don't know what to do with it, or I should say what to for this. Does we had to attract media or do we have to complain somewhere? Does anyone has any answer???????
